Leeds Petanque tournament for the ColliersCRE cup - run by Northern Petanque

HISTORY
The tournament was started in 1998 by Martin Wainwright , chairman of the Scurragh Wainwright Foundation which along with Leeds City Council set up Bond Court as a boules terrain a few years earlier.

The first tournament was very much a trial and it was won by 2 players from the British Petanque Association who Martin had contacted for help with the idea.

Since then the event has become an annual triples tournament and has expanded considerably.
This was helped in 2000 when ColliersCRE agreed to sponsor the event with a large silver plated cup.
Since then ColliersCRE have sponsored the event each year by providing administration and organisation along with the tournament organiser Alan Swift - President of Northern Petanque (a region of the English Petanque Association).

In 1999 £150 was raised for the Lord Mayor's charity appeal (candlelighters).

Since then all money raised by the tournament has gone to the Leeds Macmillan Cancer Relief Appeal.
From 2004 Macmillan have started taking a more active part in the tournament providing help with the organisation.
They also suggested a plate tournament for teams failing to make the main 2nd round. The 1st plate tournament was held in 2004 and 14 of the losing teams took part. ColliersCRE have also provided a trophy - the Robert Barry plate.

The Lord Mayor presented the trophies in 2004 and from 2005 there is a Lord Mayor of Leeds Rosebowl for the runners up in the main tournament.
