8/8/10 - Home Nations
Congratulations to Ray Gatenby , Steve Rice and Dan Rice who played as England 2 and won 10 out of their 12 games , only 1 England team did better by winning 11 games.
This was part of a fairly easy England victory. (England 66 wins
, Scotland 44 wins , Wales 34 wins).
14/7/10 - Petanque in Morley Schools
11 Schools based around Morley took part in a petanque
competition held at Wetherby Petanque Club.
Initially Education Leeds contacted Leeds Petanque Club which led to Paul
Simpkins and Richard Moss travelling to most of the schools involved to give
them some basic knowledge of the game.
The event was held at Wetherby due to the Leeds terrain not being large enough.
Alan , John and Jenny from Wetherby PC plus Ted (Youth Development Officer) ran
the event along with Paul and Richard.
2 girls and 2 boys from each school took part , due to time
constraints the event was held as a 3 round snake with each game being to 7
points.
This was followed by a final for the top 2 boys pairs and the top 2 girls pairs.
The event was a great success despite the limited time available
and the aim is to repeat it next year.
Arranging playing facilities at the schools is difficult but at least one school
has an all weather surface available for practising on so hopefully some
petanque will be played throughout the next school year.
The schools taking part were
Gildersome Primary
Woodkirk High
Blackgates Primary
Westerton Primary
Morley Newlands Primary
Morley High
Bruntcliffe High
Birchfield Primary
East Ardsley Primary
Asquith Primary
Hill Top Primary
In the girls final Bruntcliffe High beat
Westerton Primary.
In the boys final Asquith Primary
beat Bruntcliffe High.
The boys from Woodkirk High won all their 3 games but were unlucky that Asquith
and Bruntcliffe also won all their games and with a slightly better points
difference.
9/7/10 - Home Nations Qualifiers
These were held at Luton on the 4th July.
The only Northern team to enter was Ray Gatenby , Steve Rice and Dan Rice who
finished 2nd and so qualify to play for England at Inverness on August 7/8.
14/6/10 - Regional Qualifiers
The qualifiers finished with the usual tense and close finish
with the squad not being fully decided until the final game.
5 teams finished on 9 wins with 3 of them making the main squad but the other 2
losing out on points difference.
After 3 days and 16 games the 9th place team finished only 2 points behind 8th.
The challenge squad positions were also very close with the 13th team losing out due to having a 5 point worse points difference than the 12th team.
The last round was played in a torrential downpour which if it had arrived earlier would have caused major problems since large areas of the terrain became unplayable but by this time only 2 games were still playing.

10/5/10 - Regional Qualifiers
17 teams have entered the qualifiers.
The 18th place will be taken by the juniors rather than have a bye but the
juniors were not available at the first qualifier.
The weather at the Fox was dry but very cold in the morning , it eventually
became quite pleasant by the time we finished in the evening.
3/5/10 - Northern vs Leicestershire
The Yorkshire vs Leicestershire annual match has been rebranded as Northern vs Leicestershire , partly to give the Northern squad more chance to play as a squad and partly to strengthen the Yorkshire team after very bad results recently.
The match was played in very cold windy conditions and in the
morning rain showers and hail didn't help. It was sunny by the end but still
very cold.
The first round was even at 4 games each but in the 2nd round Leicester won all
8.
Rounds 3 to 6 were all close but Northern had the edge in each.
The match was not decided until the final 2 games of the last round with Northern needing to win 1 of those to confirm their victory.
Th final score was Northern 25 wins (+30points) - Leicester 23 Wins (-30 points) full results
28/3/10 - Northern Ladies at the EPA Grand Prix
After the 1st Ladies Grand Prix held at Lordswood, Angie Gaughan
and Chris Best are in 2nd place having won 4 of their 5 games , only losing to
the only unbeaten team on the day.
Angie and Chris were the only Northern players taking part in any of the Grand
Prix (Mens, Ladies , Juniors)
21/3/10 - Final Winter League Event
The final winter league event took place at Bridlington with14 Pairs enjoying a lovely
spring day.
The winners on the day were Bill Vicker and Chris Cann but Bill just missed out
on the overall title.
The closest ever winter league went into the final game of the
final event with 4 players tied on 28 wins.
Bill Vicker and Mick Hardisty both won their final game but the other 2 tied
players Robert Eunson and Ted Beetham were playing each other.
Both had a better points difference than Bill and Mick so the winner had to be
Robert or Ted.
Fittingly their game was the last to finish and Robert came out on top 13-2 so
the final league table saw 3 players on 29 wins but Robert is this years Winter
League winner.
